LONDON'S OLDEST ELEMENT-

ary

ARY SCHOOL.

London's reputed oldest element- foundation, the Amicable Society's School. St. Marychurch- street, Rotherhithe, is now the Proud possessor of new play- ground. Until recently the play. ground for the 190 boys who at tend the school measured only thirty yarda by ten yards, but the trustees of the school have pur chased a large piece of adjoining land, which was formerly a timber yard, and have had it converted into a playground measuring about a quarter of an acre.

The play ground, which was purchased and converted at a total cost of nearly

the use of the pupils to the Bishop 32,000, was opened last week for

of Woolwich. The history of the Amicable Society's School is in- teresting. The original foundation was in 1613, when Peter Hill and Robert Bell gave a house and land for the teaching of eight sons of seamen, It was endowed with £6 43 for the poor and £3 to pay the schoolmaster who lived in the house. About 1700 the school amalgamated with the Charity School. In 1797 the school was "further amalgamated with the Amicabie Society's School, which had been in existence since 1733. The original site was in the present churchyard of St. Mary's Church, close by.
