The British attitude to the Tarlt 'Conferance" was made clear at a mesting of the foreign delegates this morning when Sir Ronald' Macleay, noting on instructions from Sir Austen Chamberlain in "view of the numerous erronous and misleading statements which had appeared recently in the local Press and Japanese newspapers," made the following declaration: "His Majesty's Government has instructed me to state it in te earnest dealre and intention to Implement the Washington Treaty with the least possible delay, and grant the surtaxes provided therein.. if this should be the wish of the Chinese Government, and It IA prepared to discuss any reasonable proposal put forward by the Chin- ese delegates in harmony with the spirit of the letter of the Washing- ton Treaty.
"His Majesty's Government also wishes it to be clearly understood that in the event of the Chinese Delegation on the resumption of the Conference, tabling à proposal for immediate enforcement of the Washington sur-taxes, it has no intention after agreement on such proposals has been reached, to sus- pend the proceedings of the Con- ferene or break off negotiations for the conclusion of the Tariff Treaty, which were interrupted by recent political developments in -China."
After the meeting, the following communique was issued by the Netherlands Legation on behalf of the delegates: "The delegates of the Foreign Power to the Chinese Customs Tari Conference met at
the Netherlands Legution this morning. They expressed the unanimous and varnest desire' to proceed with the work of the Con ference at the earliest possible moment, when the delegates of the Chinese Gatanment-are-in-a-posi- tion to resume the discussion with the foreign delegates of, the pro- blems before the Conference..
