are in the nature of elaborate, re- ceptions. Melba is, a particularly strict disciplinarian. But many famous artistes thoroughly enjoy the business of making records. They regard it as a holiday.
"The most difficult cases are per formers who regard recording as a strain. When John McCormack and Kreisler come to the studio we have to keep the place free from people except the recorder."
Other artistes prefer an au- dience.. Pachmann is never at his beat without somebody to listen to him. The same may be anid of Lamond, another famous pianist, and before their pieces both these artistes give talks that are often very interesting.

BRAHIM PRIESTS AND THE .SHINGLE.
Madras, June 5. The Deputy Magistrate of Nellore, says the evening "Swarajya," convicted and sen- tenced a Brahim religious head to a fine of Rs. 100, on the com- plaint of a Brahmin widow of 25 years of age. for alleged defama- tion. The defamation consisted in the religious head having ordered. the expiation ceremony to а Brahmin priest for having officiat- ed in the house of a widow on the occasion of the anniversary of her husband's death, and the expiation was ordered by the re- ligious head on the ground that the widow was leading a question- able life, as evidenced by locks of hair which she was growing in spite of her husband's death, widowhood being generally ob- served-in-true-orthodox fashion by the complete shave of the head.
The Deputy Magistrate sen- tenced the accused to a fine of Rs. 100, out of which the sum of Rs. 50 was ordered to be paid to." the complainant. -Associated Press of India.
