TOBACCO DANGERS. GERMAN PROFESSOR'S HINTS TO SMOKERS.

Some hints to smokers are given in un exhaustive article on nicotinism by Professor Heinrich Kionka, quoted by the "Lancet." He.states that nicotine exists in tobacco in quantity varying from 1 to 3.3 per cent., while in France It may reach to 6 per cant.

The

the professor makes startling suggestion that carbon monoxide ia present in tobacco smoke in great quantities and that this accounts for the sedative effect of smoking.

Here are some of his sugges-" tions for minimising the "danger" of smoking:

A long pipe is better than a short one.

A dry cigar is better than a.

damp one.

The first half of any smoke does much less harm than the

lust.
