These three vessels were old Conarders and had been taken over by the Fairfeld. Shipbuild | Mng Co., Glasgow, in part payment of new vessels for the Cunard Fleet by whom they were, placed on the Pacific rm in conjunction with the C. P. R. They were de- placed by the three Empresses China, India, and Japan in 1891..

Chpt. Wallace rejoined the China Merchants" service in 1890) and retired in March, 1923. Fn 1883 he was in command of the truding between "Chiyuen,” Amoy. Hongkong. Singapore and Penang, a run long since abolishe ed by the China Merchants Co. Apr. | but he will best be rememberedi {{ as Master of the "Haean," which he commanded for nearly 25 | years.

He married on November 8, 1878, Miss Emily Buyers, whose father had the Dock at Singapore. Mrs. Wallace pre-deceased her husband, having died on July 28 | 1919, and they are survived by a
