En company with Mr. O AL Smith, manager of Messrs. White- away, Laidlaw & Co.'s important branch, here, a representative of the "China Maik made a tour" of the premises with the object of ascertaining the nodus operandi of the burglars. At the very rear was found huge gap in the will, this having been made by a steel prod! which incidentally, had been discarded and left on the: ground after it had served its pur- pose. The thieves had gained access to the other side of the wall by means of a narrow door leading to the employees' staircase. once proved an "easy thing" for accomplished burglars..

Once inside. the nocturnal visitors appeared to have gone straight to the first floor, on which is situated the manager's office. With the aid of a spirit lamp and various tooly-all of which were subsequently left behind the Ithieves made a concerted attack on the safe, which, however, de- filed all their efforts, as was the case in the previous burglary lasti year The lock and the combina- tion working were "put out of commission" by the force used in endeavouring to open the safe, but eventually the gang had to own themselves defeated. The only inconvenience arising out of this incident was that Mr. Smith was üneble to open his safe in the usual way this morning, thus being deprived all morning of his cash, books, and other keya used on the premises...

A hurried search seems to have been made by the unwelcome in- truders around the first floor for anything of value to take away, care being observed not to remove anything too bulky to go through the opening in the wall downstairs.

The burglars next retraced their steps to the ground floor, where the operations have already been described. Amongst the loot was a roll of 60 yards of flannel posrible to give any estimate of the value of the goods stolen, or, indeed, to enumerate what exact ly has gone. It so happened that to-day was to witness the com- mencement of stock-taking by the
