THE trend of pe

fashions in New

and Paris shows

yond, a doubt that crepe holds first place as the favored matérial for afternoon, frocks, and for daytime dresses that combine lightness of weight and roolness of fabric.

This enviable position has been held by crepe for some time, as it is quite as smart in dark or vivid shades for Winter as it is in pastel tints and white for Summer. One can never grow weary of the ap pearance of the material, simply because Phone are so many differ- ent varieties of crepe from which, to choose. One may have six or more crepe frocks. and still

the appearance of the fatyrie

may be different in each

Flat crepe gives us the

Crepe rofa thinner and shows the weave of the fabie, and is ene of the loveliest crepes, for afternoon and evening frocks. This more expen- sive crepe is being strongly featured this Summer in lightweight wraps for. both day and evening

Now, combinations of material are stressed in many of the simple frocks shown this Summer, and the crepe model is no exception... It favors a bit of Khiny satin to lend variety, or perhaps chiffon or

a touch of velvet. This,

by the way, is consid ered important as indicating the trend of Autinn fashions. Already the de- signers in this country And abroad are considering the combinations which will be effective for their Fall openings. "Satin with cloth, and taffeta with velvet are two which will doubtless appear.

To return to the simple Summer after-・ noon models shown here, all of them use. crepe, either to make the frock which adds another material for contrast, or to trim a frock of natin.

always rather tight, with simple band or turn-back cuffs. Either of these cuff treatments allows for applique trimming. Then

there is the long sleeve which fits rather close to the upper arm and widens just a trifle as it nears

the cuff. It is always drawn in to a tight tuff, however, and this wider por- tion just above the cuff gives space for

applique trimming.

Long sleeves, by the way, are favored by smart women, even in frocks of very sheer material. Dainty Sum mer frocks of georgette and thìn crepes have long sleeves which are finished with little bands at the cuffs, the banda extending out into narrow ties "which" "Are Krrunged in a tiny bow at

The scarfs are lovely transparent afluirs, and very often they are hand painted in bright-colored Sunimer flow- ers. Any thin scarf er coat which reveals the line and color of the. dress beneath is smart at the present season, and the fact that one color may be super imposed on the other in this "manner makes for very delightful tinting effects.

The same is true of very thin crepessor chiffons used for dance frocka. These youthful dresses often have long sleeves and very decollete necklines. The full skirts call for lovely, petticoats beneath, and most of the frocks are de- signed with a full chiffon slip to be worn immediately beneath and a straight.
