MORE NEW LIGHT ON

BRITISH HISTORY, Y

As the result of excavations carried out on the Sussex Downe, near Brighton, by Mr. Garnet, Wolseley, a relative of the famous General, and supervised by Mr. Reginald A. Smith, of the British Museum, important additions are being made to our knowledge of early British history,

བརྙ、

On a lonely slope of the Sussex Downs, to the north-east of the well-known pre-historic fort. of Cissbury, have been discovered hitherto unsuspected remaids of villages of the late Bronze Age period, of the Iron Age, or Celtle

period; and of a Celtic tribe which persisted right through the period of the Roman occupation, absorb- ing Roman culture, and finally was destroyed by the Saton Invaders.

The charred remnants are clearly to be seen, now that they' have uncovered from the kindly turf which hid them, of the site. where undoubtedly the Romang- British fought their last fight against the Saxon, and met 240 'fate that the Saxon Chronicle so

tersely describes to Anderida "Not one Brit was left." Littered about under the accumulated loose soil and turf and Romany tiles. Roman tile nallas frants of walls with coloured temper, Roman glass, and a large amount" of fragments of pottery

Gradual Progressary Experts declare that age pot- sherds reveal a gradual progress from the purely Celtic type to native attempts to initate Roman ware and, indeed, to pure Roman ware. A broken wine cup was found of the finest Camian ware, delicately ornamented: Among the mass of miscellaneous frag- ments have been identified por 'tions of the el sic Roman amphore, used for hippurting wine from Italy..

Other evidenceeded by the spade, and it breted by Mr. Reginald Smith other experts; is considered stablishing con- clusively that this particular kung darkene Celtic tribe invaded E and sorae seven hundred years before the. Saxons came, and first brought into England knowledge of iron. Armed with their superior wes- pons, they exterminated the in- habitants of a Bronze Age village, of which the most definite remains have been found here, and estab lished a village of their own about a quarter of a mile from the Bronze Age site, at the top of the hill known as Park Brow,

The excavators to-day are dig-- ging out the doors of their houses, the deep pits in the chalk used for stores by them, the curious little holes that must have been made for cupboards, some still contaiıı- ing the posts they were meant to hold. Abundant evidence has been found of the hilling, the weaving, and the feasts of this earliest known of Celtic tribes in England.
