Reports from Fez state that after a period of relative calm. great activity is again in evid- ence on the front. The Riffs ap parently are determined to make à last effort before the arrival of further French reinforcements and the putting into operation of the Franco-Spanish agreement,

Wezzan seems to be the objec tive of considerable pressure exercised in the western sector. For the first itme yesterday the. French aeroplanes flew over the | Spanish zone while Spanish uero- planes dropped bombs on Riffan groups going to the French front.

The Riffs and their movements hampered by the attitude of dis- sidents who show obvious signs of weariness. Operations carried, out by some French flying! columns among the tribes at Taoulta and Branes brought dermands for negotiations with a view to aubmission. Abd el Krim in order to ward off the danger, has hastened to capture hostages.

Tokyo, July 29, The death occurred last night of Mr. Bancroft, the American Ambassador to Japan.

[Mr. Edgar Addison Bancroft was appointed. Ambassador at Tokyo, on August 27 last year, in succession to Mr. Cyrus E., Woods. Born at Galesburg, Ill., on November 20, 1857, a son of Mr. Addison N, Bancroft, the late Ambassador was educated at Knox College and was married in 1896. He was in general practice as a lawyer at Galesburg 1884-92 and later at Chicago. He was solicitor for several prominent companies, a member of the law- firm of Bancroft and Stephens, at member of the American Bar Association, the Illinois State Bar Association (being President in the year 1910) and was an ex- President of the Chicago Bar Association. Among his publica- tions is "The Moral Sentiment of the People and the Foundations

evidence that Dr. hiding in the Soviet Embassy in Peking and had reason to believe that Fortunatoff would return to Shanghai SOON to face the charges against him. Therefore he moved an adjournment of the present defendant's case which was intimately connected with the charges against Fortunatoff.

The application was denied on the opposition of the prosecution. The police inspector gavé evidence and the case was then adjourned until Saturday.

Warsaw, July 29.-A Commun- ist murdered a political Police agent named Cechnowski in front of the Supreme Court building at Lvoff during an interval in the trial of Communists charged with the attempted murder of President Waydiechowski some months ago, Cechnowski was an important witness for the prose-- cution.. The murderer, Isaac Botwere, was arrested after mar- rowly escaping lynching. A Communist document was found on him ordering the murder of Cechnowski and other political police.
