The loss is covered by insurance, in the case of the Ho Rong Bank with the South British Insurance Company, and in the case of the Chinese Commercial Bank with the Overseas Assurance Company. The detective department are conducting enquiries.
The manager of the Ho Fong Bank told a "Straits Times" repre- sentative that this was the first occurrence of the kind that he re- membered. The Ho Hong Bank had been in the habit of remitting consignments of currency notes by registered paréel post for the past eight years without any loss. The only time that the Bank had ex- perienced any loss was when a local steamer went down with a consign-i ment of silver plate, but that was recovered by salvage,
