PROTECTION AGAINST LOSS OF BLOOD.

The explanation of the long standing physiological mystery of how it is possible for the body to lose large quantities of blood, either as a result of wounds or through internal hæmorrhage, without death, was given on April 21 at the Royal Institution, by Professor Joseph Barcroft in the first of his lectures on." The Effect of Heat on the Circulation."

It was easy to understand why a greater quantity of circulating blood should be required with increase of warmth, because the amount of blood flowing through the skin could be gbserved to increase, but it was not easy to what

the understand mechanism by which this quantity of circulating blood was increas- ed. Experiments showed that not merely the liquid in the blood increased but also the red colour- ing matter, and it was clear that there must be some place in the body which contained a large number of red blood corpuscles that normally were quite outside the general cir 'culation.

The spleen had been an obvious organ to investigate as being possibly such a reservoir, but the difficulty was that at first sight it did not appear" that the spleen was sufficiently large to provide the necessary supply of blood.
