CHAIRMAN'S TRAGIC DEATH.

A letter from London announces the death of Mr. George Whale. which occurred while he was pre- siding at the annual dinner of the Rationalist Press. Association, of of which he had been chairman since 1922. Mr. Whale was taken suddenly ill at the conclusion of his speech, and died in a few

momenta.

The writer remembers Mr. Whale as one whose lonks belied his seventy-six years. He had active life as a solicitor, and later as mayor of Woolwich, in which town he was educated. He had been connected with the R.P.A. for several years as a director before he occupied the chair in succession to Sir Herbert Leon. His enthusiasm in the cause which The believed to be right was infec- tious, as was his cheery good nature, and his loss is much felt.

Food From Hongkong. (China Preas.)

Shanghai, June 6. Mr. T. E. Trueman, Food and Transport Controller, during the present emergency, refused yea terday to issue any statement to the public concerning the food situation in Shanghai, despite the anxiety of many people.

It was learned from other sources, however, that several hundred bags of flour, purchased by the Muncipal Council, arrived here yesterday from Hongkong: It is also understood that the Food Control has made pro-: vision for landing tons of canned goods and other food products on short notice if necessary.

The flour arriving yesterday was undoaded from lighters at: Nanking Road jetty under a strong guard and was taken to godowns until the food situation warrants distribution.

The Food, Control committee has held meetings every after- noon since its institution last Tuesday in the Council Chamber of the Municipal Administra tion building...

It is learned that the machinery. for distributing food in the Settlement is now ready at a moment's notice to be set in operation.

Although it could not be de finitely determined, it is under- stood that the general plan in case the situation grows serious, will be to turn the Town Hall into a market place where. Settlement residents purchase supplies. Requisitioning of food from stores in the Settlement may be resorted to if the situation be comes precarious.
