PERJURED CASE AGAINST

LILIAN GISH

Miss Lilian Gish, recently ap- peared in an American court nibbling a carrot, which she con- tinued to munch at intervals.

"Carrots," said Miss Gish, to an interviewer, "are good for nerves, and this one helped to soothe mine."

Miss Gish, who was followed into court by troops of adoring New York typists, was defendant to an action for breach of con- tract brought against har by Mr. Charles H. Duell, her business man and recent fiancé, for whom she left Mr. D. W. Griffith and appeared under the banner of Inspiration Pictures, founded by Mr. Duell.

They went to fialy and pro- duced The White Sister and "Romola," after which Miss Gish promised to visit: London, but the promise was mysteriously can- celled and ane returned to New York, where she said that she would like to "put a hemisphere between herself and, Mr. Duell."

Miss Gish, explained her counsel, has a horror of legal documents and an aversion to reading them. She placed abso- lute confidence in Duell, and even allowed him to handle most of her Financial transactions. She named him executor under will and made him trustee of her securi- ties. Similar documents in favour of Duell were executed by her mother and sister, Dorothy Gish." Counsel for Mr. Duell said that Bulle har rushed her

thirtieth birthday, and "should" therefore be sensible enough to know what she was doing in sign- ing a contract."
