BIGGEST TELESCOPE.
TO BE FIXED ON A MOUNTAIN.
<
12
The biggest telescope which can be made at the present time is to be erected on Mount Salève, near Geneva, at an altitude of over 4,000 ft.
What its size will be is not yet known. Experiments are being earried out by two American scientists near Paris, and it is hoped they may succeed in casting a glass disc for a reflector twice as big as the present largest at Mount Wilson, in America, which measures 100in: in diameter:
In any case, the reflector wil weigh several tone, and will have to be brought to its destination by road on a truck, drawn by motor tractor. A start has already been made with the building of a road up the Salève, but the obser- vatory will not be built until the dimensions of the telescope are known.
In addition to the astronomical observatory, it is proposed to establish a meteorological station, with a powerful wireless installa- tion able to keep in touch with weather conditions all over the world.
The scheme is the private undertaking of a wealthy engineer of Indian and French extraction, who married an American lady possessing a large property" in Haute Savoie, on the southern slope of Mount Salève.
