QUAINT STORY OF BOOZE" AND BRIBES FROM RUM ROW.

'Rear-Admiral Billard."

MADELINE

The richest story of "rum rew" came to light with the 100-mile chase and capture of the schooner, Madeline Adame, by a coast guard cutter which had wireless orders to "chuse her to London if neces- sary." it developed that rum runners had attempted to bribe coast guardsmen on a smaller vessel actually to go out to the Madeline Adams, take on a carge of liquor and lund it for the bootleggers. The cargo was taken off by the voast guard bont, but instead of delivering it, the rum runners it was turned over to the officials and the bootleggers were arrested. Then the coast guard cutter was ordered to mea to "get" the big schooner, which had a 450,000 whisky cargo on bourd. Rear-Admiral F. G. Billbyrd in Commandant of the U. S. Coast Guard, He mobilised the greater part of the entire "dry navy against the rom-running fleet.
