After returning to

Cup for Gelf. from France he came to Shanghai; arriving here on January 3, 1870, and first in association with Messrs. Muirhead & Co, later absorbed by Boyd & Co, and then their succes- sors. the Shanghai Dack & Engineering Co, he became one of the most widely known and deservedly famed shipbuilders in the Far East. He rapidly rose to be the controlling it fluence in the company, and under his adminis- tration not only were merchant ships built, but gunboats for the Yangize as well. The. Government of the Philippines, after the islands Came under American jurisdiction, also had their coastal revenue cruisers built at this estab- lishment. The "Old Dock" be came a name, not confined to the'| one shipbuilding establishment, but covering under other titles im- portant yards on either side of the river. In these during the war ships were built for the British | Government, and as head of this great concern Mr. Prentice contri- buted his full share towards the campaign. It may without ex- aggeration be said that Mr. Prentice did more than anybody to make. Shanghai the important shipbuilding and ship-repairing centre into which has developed during the past 30 years.

It was not with shipbuilding alone however, that Mr. Prentice identified himself with the business life of the community. His great; business capacity caused him to be sought after as a director of public companies, and for several years he was identified with the boards of many of the best known corpora- tions here. He was a model direc tor, giving the most scrupulous at- tention to the affairs of all the com- panies in which he officiated.

Those who knew Mr. Prentice intimately would not, however, put his great achievements in business as amongst his foremost charac- teristics. Rather would they men- tion the friendly atmosphere which he created about him and the genially of his disposition, His residence France had made hini very much persona grata with the French community of Shanghai, to quote one instance, and so be was always a centre of interest diving his visits to the Cercle Sportif

Mr. Prentice had for long been member of the Union Church and attended its services regularly.
