Canton, April 30. Forcing in the thin edge of the wedge to drive out Dr. Sun's followers, the Yunnanese mer- cenarles have taken over the Canton Arsenal, and are now trying to obtain the Police Com missionership.

Recently, General Yang Hui- 'man, commander in-chief of the Yunnan army in Canton, up pointed an officer.over the head of Wong So, director of the Arsenal. Before Wong knew his position. the Yunnanese had obtained a grip. Yesterday: Wong left and the Yunnanese took over withort any fighting. This step, how ever, will further strain the re- lations between the Kuomintang Government and the Yunnanese militarists.

The official observance by the legal profession at the Supreme Court this morning of the passing of the oldest practising solicitor in the Colony was most impressive.

The Chief Justice said: We are met here to-day to do honour to the memory of a very respected member of our profession. I have not had the pr lege that you have had of knowing him well, but I have often heard people speak about him and always in terms of what I might call affectionate re- gard. He was very loyal-to the traditions of the profession and no less loyal in supporting the traditions of the courts in the Colony: He will be remembered, not merely as a vigorous per- sonality in that he remained in harness with fortitude to the end but also for his acts of generosity. I wish to join in the expression of sympathy to Mrs. Stephens.

SILK DUTY.

WILD IT AFFECT

HONGKONG?,

CANTON EXPORTS.

From enquiries made locally it would appear that the silk duty announced by the Chancellor of the Exchequer is only anticipated to interfere temporarily with free ordering of raw silk and piece goods.

Inasmuch as

silk is a luxury article it is thought that the trade will probably assimilate the tax without serious interference in the long run and that the "halt" will be only temporary.

Piece goods are taxed more heavily than raw silk, British trade being protected, on the face of it, by the difference between the two.

| Lordships regarding Mr Stephens. I had the privilege of making, his acquaintance in 1888 when I first arrived in the Colony, when in fact he was my landlord, as he was the landlord of many barris- ters and solicitors practising in 'he Colony.

As Your Lordships have stated, the late Mr. Stephens always strove his utmost to maintain the high standard of honour and pro- bity in the legal profession. That will be one of the best things, we can say about him. But there is something else to be said which has been touched upon to a certain extent by Mr. Justice Wood-the charities which were dispensed and concealed. I myself, my Lord, as a member of the Church body and as President of the European Y.M.C.A. can testify to large acts of benevolence which have been bestowed upon St. John's. Cathe- aral and the Y.M.C.A. by our deceased friend. I have also been given to understand on good] authority that in private he also bestowed money and, charitable gifts on those deserving of them.
