The seizure of $14,000 worth of chandu (opium) on the Apear. steamer Takliwa when

that vessel arrived from China last month had a sequel in the District Court, when Capt. H. F. Winnett, master of the ship, was summoned in connection with the seizure.

Mr. G. S. Carver, who appeared for the defence, said that Mr. Taylor, head of the preventive service, acceded to the view that this was only, a technical offence." The chandu was found in the passengers' lavatory; and no re- port of the seizure was made for some reason or other to the officer on duty, by the revenue officers. The ship went on to Penang, and disembarked the remaining pas- sengers, and the first the captain Jamaged perkapse must be left in the heard about the seizure was at Clowns for examination by the Calcutta.

According to Egyptotegists, Dr. George A Relenor professor of Egyptology at Harvard University and director of the Harvard-Boston Museum Egyptian Expedition, has unearthed an ancient tomb near the Giza Pyramide that will prove richer, both in lore and treasure, than that of King Tut-Ankk÷Amen. It is 1700 years older than that of Tit Auki-Amen, and may be that of King Beneferu or some member of bis -royal family.

PIONEER WORK. Intelligence tests in their modera form are. due mainly to the pioneer work of Binet, in Paris, who, with his colleague Simon, published in 1905 the first scale of tests. Twelve years later intelligence testing received its second great impetus from the work of the psychologists who examined with tests some two million soldiers of the American army.

Binet's first test is to ask the child to place a bunch of keys upon the table, then to bring the examiner a box" which is pointed out, finally to choose the door of K the room Similar tests to 'this made in the schools, in various countries give the following I approximate results-

At 3 years of age every fourth child will pass. Every second child at the age of 4%, and all normal children at ten,

At the other end of the scale come the very cloborate tests used today in Paris and Brussels and elsewhere for the purpose of selecting mator-car drivers.

All these tests are not arbitrary questions framed in a laboratory, There are the result of estimating the average capacity of thousands or tens of thousands of subjects.
