The only witness who was called upon to give evidence was Mr. Frank B. Dittman, purser of the s.s. President Cleveland, He stated that the accused," whose name was R. E. M. F C. Vaux, appearing for the American Express Company, said that a report was made to the! Company: Stung bai that several cheques issued in favour of Mr. Jones had been stolen or lost. The Company Immediately circulated the news to their branches and other concerns. The sum in- volved in the missing cheques was Hold $2,500, of which $1,600 worth of cheques had been found on the accused - A number had been negotiated, and $450 was still out and may be pre- sented in due course, as Mr. Vaux said that the cheques went from hand to hand a long, time like ordinary bank notes before they were presented at the Company's offices. As the American Express Company had taken years to build up the travellers' cheque business. and the loss of a cheque would be damaging to their reputation, Mr. Vaux asked His Worship to take a serious view of the case. He mentioned that Mr. Jones, who was now in Manila, was bringing a claim against the Company in respect of the missing cheques.
At this stage the accused was sentenced to three months hard

TROTSKY STILL A POWER IN SOVIET RUSSIA.
Despite offrial Bolshevik asseverations to the contrary, it is becoming clear that Trotsky's political davs are by no means numbered. The Russian colony in Berlin reads many ponsibilities into a dispatch sent to the "Berliner Tageblatt" from Moscow by Paul Scheffer, who declares that the future of Trotsky will be the real text of the success of the present comprehensive attempt of the Holsheviks to canciliate the Russian peamalry, that is to any, the vast bulk of the population. "He was," writes Scheffer, "the man who niways advocated the regeneration of the party by infusion into it of the healthy, natural blood of the country. Over the head of the party, he is the attractive, fascinating, magin force, believe that we shall see Trotsky again. His accommodation with the party would be the symbol of their accommodation with the country."

It was alleged by the prosecution that all the children had been confined to the preinises of the blacksmith's shop, which was well barred and bolted and none of them had been allowed to leave the premises during their captivity. One of them, the oldest, is illeged to have been confined to the premises for six years. These un- fortunate children are said to have 10000 heed compelled to work day and. night and to have received two scanty meals of rice a day. A pair of handcuffs were also found by the police suspended to obe of the walls, which it is alleged were used as a punishment for anyone who refused to work, the un- fortunate child being suspended by. the wrists.
Inquiries have been made by the French Police in order to find the parents of the children and already two of them have, been claimed, one by a Chinese resident in Rue Lafayette and the other by a re- sident in the Chinese City. The remainder were removed to the French Police Station, where they are awaiting other claimants. The appearance of these children is nothing short of pitiable and their ragged clothes and scarred bodies reveal the hardship which they have suffered.
