FOOTBALL. INTEREST IN SCOTTISH LEAGUE.

It "was

a good thing in the Interests of the League that Rangers met with a check on Saturday, (says a mall paper of January 24) and that from a most unexpected quarter. They could do no more than draw with lowly Queen's Park, one of the clubs who are fighting to keep a place in the First Division. Airdrieonians had a 6-2 victory over Morton and Hibernians, who are, third in the Championship Hist, beat Hamilton Academicalis by 2-1.

At present Rangers have a lead of three points over Airdrieonians, ARTIFICIAL WREATHS IN STOCK and are six points better than

Hibernians.

All the other clubs are far behind in the race. for the Championship, and, indeed, se might almost be said that any two of the remaining seventeen are in danger, more or less, of relegation.

Celtic have lost 24 points in 26 games, and Ayr United, who are worst off in that respect, and are at the foot of the table, have con ceded only pine, more. Celtic were beaten at Motherwell, where unfortunate scenes occurred. One of the Celtic players, M'Grogan, their new centre-half, was ordered off the field, and there was some stonethrowing, in the course of which a Motherwell man was struck and knocked out. Several arrests were made.

Among the clubs who are in danger, and who were beaten, were Heart of Midlothian, who: lost to St Mirren at Paisley. Others similarly placed who got into further arrears were Morton, Ayr United, Falkirk, and Kilmarnock. Clubs in the danger iune who improved their prospects were Aberdeen, who defeated Partick Thistle; Cowdenbeath, who won at Ayr; Dundee, who beat Falkirk by 1-0; Motherwell, who were victorious over Celtic; and Third Lanark, who were 'successful over Kilmarnock, St. Johnstone did well to draw with Raith Rovers at Kirkcaldy, and at the moment both the newcomers to the First Division-the Saints of Perth and Cowdenbeath are fairly safe.

Clyde and Dundee United had both victories and continue at the top of the Second Division on equal terms. Bo'ness, who beat Armadale, are now third and!

OF SPORT.

Clydebank, who were beaten at Dunfermline by 40, stand fourth, Bve points behind the leaders. In this division, East Stirlingshire and Forfar Athletic are in greatest of relegation, with St. danger Bernarda and Johnstone in close attendance.

Vale of Leven, leaders in the Third Division, were lasers, and that helped Nithsdale Wanderers and.Queen of the South to creep up on them.

RUGBY FOOTBALL

ENGLAND'S DEFEAT OF

WALES.

:

The following criticism of the Rugby international between Eng land and Wales is published in the Observer.

4!

It was not a great game except for the even scoring, and conse quert excitement, the play being far too scrambly. It was disap pointing, too, to see the Welsh backs continually fumbling the Considering how often ball. Wales got the ball in the serums, three-quarters should have the scored more often. As it was their first score

was distinctly

lucky. England were beaten in hooking, but they were seen to greater advantage in the line out, and the backs were much safer. The great pity was that Gibbs never once really got a chance of using his speed.. In fact, the ball never came his way at all except in defence, which is the mere unfortunate; as this is decidedly a weak spot in his play.

RACING

ENTRIES FOR KENTUCKY CLASSIC.

More than 150" of the fastest. three-year-olds in America' probably will be nominated for the 51st renewal of the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 16. Last winter 174 entries were named for the $50,000. classic, and the number of high class two-year-olds developed this poison indicates as many er more will be in the race before nominations close the last week in February. Of the large num ber originally made eligible, only rarely do more than a score start in the big race.

Lists of probable nominees already have made their appear- ance; based upon the form race horses are showing, and a large number of two-year-olds of the are prominently 1924 meets mentioned.

Captain Hal, Master Charlie and Stimulus, three sterling per- formers, are among the early favourites while the names of

Blue Warbler, Brown Sugar, Kentucky Cardinal, Lee O. Cotner Maud Muller, Sumpter, Sunsard, Sunny Man, Young Martin and many more of the east and west are given a call.

The high cost of starting a ☀ horse in the race, $500, and the class of animals entered, are, responsible for the comparatively" few survivors..

Of the outsides the men of the match on the English side were Massey. Hamilton Wickes and The latter was easily a match for Delahay, and was mainly respon- sible for the latter's bad passing has no need to be dissatisfied with from the scrum, which so upset the himself. Apart from two mistakes Welsh tree-quarters Kittermaster at the end, he played a brilliant cok and gave his passes beautiful-game at full-back. "Delahay found ly, and frequently picked up very his equal, or beiter, in Massey, and well indeed. Of the forwards, Tucker played the best game I have ever seen him play, and next to him one put Luddington, followed very closely by Periton, Cove-Smith, and Blakiston. All the forwards did well, and it was nice to see Wake field more prominent than of late, though he is yet far from the old Wakefield.
