Sir James Purves-Stewart, Senior Physician at Westminster Hospital, who lectured before the Society for the Study of Inebriety. on the subject of tests for drunkenness, gave evidence at Bow-street Police-court on behalf of the Hon. Thomas Plumer, $4, independent, of "Gladsmuir," Monken Hadley, Barnet, who was charged on remand with having been drunk, and with driving a motor car to the danger of the public. The prosecution alloged that in driving his car away from a restaurant in Rupert-street shortly before midnight on New Year's Eve the defendant collided with two other vehicles.

Among Herbert Muskett con- ducted the case on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, and Sir Henry Curtis-Bennet, K.C., and Mr. L.. A Byrne (instructed by Mr. Freke Palmer) appeared for the defence.

A number of witnesses; were called for the prosecution, among them Being a taxicab driver who anamed Harris Colman,

stated that when the defendant attempted to drive away after the collisions he got on the foot- board and stopped the car by applying the handbrake and switching off the engine. Witness thought the defendant was under the influence of drink.
