CANTON'S FIGHTS.

RECAPTURE OF TAMSHUI REPORTED, PRO-SUN CADETS FAIL.

Yunnanese Help for Chan Kwing-ming.

#!

Taking the course of previous wars in China several southern provinces now threaten to enter the fight between the Sun Yat-sen and Chan Kwing-ming forces in Kwangtung.

Should the worst come to pass there is a prospect of a campaign involving the greater part of South China....

Canton le still gaining ground on the East River sector, but there is a possibility of the strug- gle for domination being decided elsewhere and by other factors.

TEMPORARY CHECK.

(From Our Own Correspondent)

Canton. February 18.

With the exception of a ten- porary check at Tamshui, the pro- Sun armies are advancing all along the East River front. eastward, from the Railway and toward Waichow.)

Foklo, the key to the district around Walchow, has been vacated by Chan Kwing-ming's men who, as yet, have made no effort to stem the tide. Dr. Sun's, 'forces are taking over control.

In the general advance little war material or prisoners have been

captured, the anti-Sun detachments merely "falling, back even before the attackers reach their outposts. The "retiral" has become a "retreat." but not debacles..

A correspondent at the" front reports the recapture of Tamshúi by, the than contingent under Hung Shigun, on Tuesday even- ing when Dr. Sun's brigade of cadets from the Whampoa Mili. tary Academy, led by Russian officers. was rebuffed through advancing too far and failing to preserve the alignment. In the afternoon the cadets moved up to take over Tamshui and engagement, resulting in the first reverse for Fanton in the present fighting, ended by General Li Fook-lam's division suffering some casualties.

troop will receive backing from the entertainment, which will en parents and patrons as a result of able them to equip present mem- bers and the many who now will Lassuredly want to join, and, at Fthe same time, to lay the basis of

the very necessary Troop fund.

Mr. R. M. Dyer, to whom belongs the honour of having first suggested the troop, has gener- ously promised to give kilts and sporrans but there are many other expenses in connection with the inauguration of a Troop, and it is natural and right that those responsible should wish the Scouts to get on a self-supporting basis as soon as possible. The new movement will be worthy of all support if in the words of the Acting Commissioner it brings to the Scout spirit a national spirit that will strengthen it.

·

Of the display itself not much can be written, for it was one which would have to be attended for a full appreciation to be obtained of the entertainment provided by the antics of the cubs (whose ages ranged from five upward). They were de- ightfully unconscious of the fun they were causing when they pulled up their stockings, hitched up their belts, admired each other's styles of scarf tying, or indulged in personal controversy at the back of the stage!

Quite apart from this. how- ever, the entertainment contained items of real worth, the physical drill, the Scottish reel by four of the bays, ambulance training and Camp Fire Sing-Song being parti- cularly good and real thrills being provided in "On the Track of the Spies," an excellently qcied comedy drama written by C. E. Burgess. It might be mentioned. that the fears of the Acting Com- Silver Wolf" letter are quite un- missioner, expressed in his last

The items, which were entirely carried out by the Scottish Boy Scouts and Cubs themselves, con- stituted a very fine entertainment and at the same time demon-follows:- strated the handy nature of the instruction received by those who enrol themselves in the Scout movement.
