The chief excitement in the village has been the holding of a small theatre in the centre of the fish drying ground near one of the small shrines. The owners of the portable cookstalls took advantage of the occasion, and did a brisk trade. Some substantial stone and brick buildings are being put up where unsightly shacks used to stand.

FINE WEATHER FOR OPENING DAY.

FULL» · DETAILS OF THE FIRST THREE

EVENTS.

After threatening to, mar the opening of the annual race meeting by intermittent drizzles, the. weather took on its best behaviour before the first race started at noon.

ese mod thườn đứa course seemed a thif, khan, but on the whole, there was Ustie for com al While the ruing on the fast aide, It was to be expected that some good times would be returned. A large number of jockeys from Shanghai had swelled the list of available riders, thus paving the way to big fields where the running was not overshadowed by the presence of some much- boosted candidate.

King Sol was trying his best to put punters on good terms with themselves and there was just that cold nip in the air to make things snappy.

"

By the time the first saddling bell went at 11.30 a.m., a good many ladies had graced the course with their presence. All were appreciative of the new verandah arrangement outside the private boxes, facilitating access thereto.

-H.E. the Governor (Sir Edward Stubbs), accompanied by Captain R. Neville, A.D.C. and Mr. T. J. Gaisford-St. Lawrence, private secretary, arrived on the course with the Chief Justice (Sir Henry Cowper Gollan) just before, the start of the second race and were met by Sir Faul Chater.

P A fairly large crowd had arrived by this time to witness what promised to be a successful day's racing,

As was to be expected with the big fields in the first two races. there was some delay in getting the ponies away.
