ROMAN HOARD UNEARTHED
AT BLOOMSBURY. - -
Six hundred Roman coins in a fe state of preservation were unearthed during excavations on the site of a new hotel in Tavistock- square, Bloomsbury, says the "Daily Express."
The coins are made of copper,
and were issued in, the reign of Constantine I.
They were found in a metal box seven feet under the surface. The Department of Coins of the British Museum has accepted them for examination.
They are common colts of the fourth century, and of no monetary value, although of great interest.
It is possible that the find repre sents the bank account of a Roman citizen. Banking methods were necessarily primitive in those days, and it was usual to bury money, eighteen inches or so under the soil.
London was quite a large city in those days,
'and na doubt Tavistock-square was contained within its walls, so that it is most probable that the money represents the board of private citizen.
The fourth century was the period when the Romanisation of Britain reached its height. The country was prosperous, and British cloth and
corn, skilled artisans and builders, were famous on the Continent..

A discovery of a great under- ground stone chest six feet high, seven feet wide and 16 feet long, in a mountain fortress is reported from Yura, Tango, a province north of Kyoto, Mr.. Ichizo Sate, the owner of a mulberry erchar in Niita Yura, was having th ground turned over last month, when the workers' hoes struck: something hard about two or three feet below surface. Further ex- cavation followed and brought in view the stone chest. Five'sword blades, Bix magatama, five neck decorations and many pieces of earthenware were found in the stone receptacle, and have since been reported to the prefectural Government of the provinces. The archeological experts of the Tokyo Imperial University are shortly to visit the place.
