TRAGEDY OF THE SEA.
PANIC IN BURNING SHIP.
100 HOURS ON A RAFT.
Later and more reliable news of the disaster to the small steamer “Cigale,""[which was abandoned by her passengers and crew in a burn- ing condition, is of a thrilling character. Twenty-three people,
who tried to save themselves on a raft, are still unaccounted for. The steamer "Secunder" wireless. ed that she was returning 10 Port Louis (Mauritius), as she was unable to find the missing raft, but a reply was sent instructing the captain to carry on the search, The vessel came across a small raft on which were a priest known as Brother Joseph and one of the crew. The two men, who were utterly exhausted, were taken aboard the "Secunder," which arrived here in the evening.
The survivors declare that the fire in the "Cigale" broke out in the hold, and was followed by several explosions, in which a number of passengers were blown up, in the ensuing panic one or two others Empress of Canada either jumped into the sea of were Tyndarcus.

Seventeen. other passengers and members of the crew jumped on to a raft, of which the captain took charge, but others on board refused to join them for fear the raft would capsize.

A portion of this raft, 6ft square, had been lowered into the water, and brother Joseph saved himself by climbing on to it. Suddenly the rope connecting it with the vessel broke, and the tiny raft began to drift. Joseph screamed for help, and a sailor, leaping into
the water, swam out, and joined him. The two remained perilously clinging to their small craft for 100 hours without food or drink.. Fortunately, the sea kept calm. The sailor told his rescuers; that at one time Joseph became delirious and would have plunged foto the sea if his companion had not prevented hint The two men declare that they saw the "Cigale” go down with apparently about Beyen men will on board.
