PEER AT LAST.

PREMIER'S ORDEAL.

SPEECH WITH KNEE ON FOOTSTOOL.

HERRIOT ANSWERS BRIAND

(Reuter's Service)

" PARIS, January 24. M. Herriot has had a trying ordeal in the Chamber of Deputies -through his leg still troubling him and compelling him to rest his right knee on a footstool during his speech. He spoke for 22 hours in reply to M. Briand amidst continual interruptions from the Right deputies.

M. Herriot vigorously defended the decision to abolish the French Embassy at the Vatican, referring to the pro-German policy of the Holy See during the war. He. declared that the Papacy has been if anything less well disposed to France since the restoration-of-the Embassy at the Vatican, than before.

M. Herriot emphasised that separation of Church and State was a fundamental principle of the French constitution.

M. Brland expressedcntire approval of the Government's foreign policy, except as regards The Vatican. He declared it was to France's interest to be officially represented at the Vatican as at Moscow and Geneva. The seats of the three great Internationals have urged M. Herriot to sub ordinate party considerations to national interests, although it meant breach of the Leftists' election pledge.]
