Advices from New York states that the board of directors of the National City Bank of New York has decided to recommend to the shareholders that at the annual meeting of the bank, held on January 13 the necessary authority be granted for each shareholder to have the right to acquire one additional share of the stock of the bank for every four shares
held, payment of $200 in respect of each additional share so acquired, there- by producing $20,000,000 lá total. It was proposed that $10,000,000 be devoted to increasing the capital stock of the bank from $40,000,000 to $50,000,000, that $5,000,000 be applied to increasing the surplus from $45.000,000 to $50,000,000, and that the remaining $5,000,000 be applied through the trustees, who bold the capital stock of the National City Company for the benefit of shareholders of the bank, to increasing the capital of that com- pany from $10,000 to $12,500,000, | and increasing the surplus from $30,000,000 to $12,500,000. Even common soap produced by the Chinese factorles in Shanghai cannot compete with it. Of tollet and fancy soap, the bulk imported into Hankow.comes from Japan, Great Britain, France, and the United States; although a portion is supplied by Chinese factories in Hongkong and Shanghai. present there are eight Chinese soap manufacturing companies in Wuchang and Hankow with a total capitalization of over Tis. 1,000,000. The value of their total yearly output is estimated at over Tis. 1,000,000. All of them make common wash soap. Japanese manufacturers held a predominant position on the Hankow market in toilet soap manufacture, but lately Chinese manufacturers have been sending toilet soap to Hankow.
