The Police Recreation Club celebrated their annual sports and Christmas Tree on their grounds on New Year's Day. A varied programme of events for the young folk as well as the elders was carried out. The arrangements were in the hands of Mr. H. W. Kent, assisted by Mr Marks and Sergeants Wynne and Nicoll. The club house and grounds were tastefully decorated with flags and bunting, in among which was a large Xmas Tree. The football match, Married v.. Single, proved a novel and exciting game which ended with no score being registered. Another interesting item was the Jack High" bowls tournament. The clown (Mr. Ward) was, in the opinion of the children, perhaps next in importance to the Xmas Tree, as he appeared to be exclusively reserved by them. After the dismantling of the presents, the prizes were distributed by Mrs. Wodehouse...

Mr. John Duncan, M.inst: CE Chartered Civil Engineer and Port Engineer of Hongkong, author of the report" on the com- mercial development of the Colony's harbour. Mr. Duncan is a man of whom Hongkong can:. sightly feel proud, for his report is an historic document.
Presenting Sir. Henry Pollock, K.C., with the Degree of Doctor of Laws at the sixteenth Con- gregation of the University of Hongkong which took place on Monday afternoon, the Vice-Chan- cellor (Mr. Hornell) mentioned that the recipient was educated at Charterhouse, but left there at the early age of 18, first to go into a" bank in Old Drury Having... received £50 as a remuneration for his year's service, he withdrew to the shades of the Temple and studied law. He was called to the Bar in November, 1887, and came out to Hongkong in April, 1888, and was immediately admitted as a practitioner. Since then. Sir Henry has played many leading parts as Puisne, Judge, Police "Magistrale, Attorney-General-
both hero and in Fiji-and also as Chairman of the Peace Celebra- tion and War Memorial "Finance Committee. Sir Henry has been an ardent supporter of Constitu- tional Reform on the lines of the Petition which went to the House of Commons. He has been a mem- ber of the University Court from the start of the University.

The journalistic and medical professions were well represented at the wedding which took place at the Peak Church on Monday afternoon of Miss Gladys Livingston Murdoch, daughter of the Rev. A. G. Murdoch, MA, B.D., and Mrs. Murdoch, of Glass, Huntly, Scotland and Mr. Frederick Percy Franklin, eldest son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Franklin, of Bournemouth, Hampshire, England. Both are well known in the Colony, Mr. Franklin being manager of the "Hongkong Telegraph," and his bride on the Nursing Staff of the Government Civil Hospital The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. Copley Moyle. Mr. A. Morley attended the bridegroom as best man.
