MISSION OF PEACE.

Public Statement Expected Shortly.

Sir Robert Ho Tung has returned to the Colony from, the North but he does not wish to be interviewed at present so it is impossible. to say whether or not the reports are correct that his early return is the result of his round-table conférence plan being abandoned.

2

One report is to the effect that Sir Robert's decision to return was made as a result of a realisa- tion that the opportunity for national settlement was lost but. a much more hopeful view is taken in other quarters from which emanate the definite statement that Sir Robert Ho Tung wished to state that he was returning to Hongkong in a few days because his daughter Mary, is to be married in the Colony on January

14.

Sir Robert, according to this report, says, that he and those.. who support his iden of a round table conference of China's leaders, feel that they cannot push their project until Marshal Tuan has called his national conference." and that by awaiting the result of that conference they are operating in Marshal Tuan's move for a peaceful settlement of the differences among China's leaders.

Co-

Sir Robert arrived in Hongkong last night by the s.s. "President Wilson" and did not leave the boat until ten o'clock this morn-. ing when he went straight to his office and commenced work. His wish for a day or two's grace before he makes public any state- ment can readily be understood but Sir Robert's views on the possibilities of the prospects of the Rehabilitation Conference which is being arranged will be exceedingly interesting.

It is considered in official quar- ters that this conference will be the fore-runner of a Nationar Conference.. to which all Its decisions will have to be sub- mitted. The object of the National Conference would be to stabilise the affairs of the country,

Sir Robert went to Shanghai some weeks ago attracted by the happy prospects of a national settlement held out by Marshal Tuan Chi-jui, Marshal Chang Tso- lin and General Feng Yu-hsiang in the north. The leaders pro- posed a national conference at which to re-organize China's affairs but the opportunity was lost owing to political bargaining. For years, Sir Robert had worked to bring China's leaders together and his recent visit was the out- come of a telegram on the hopeful prospects of the situation from his own peace committee estab- lished in Shanghai.

A plank had been carried away by the strong current and four of the survivors who could not swim, hung on to it for dear life. The fifth swam out to another junk. On reaching this junk's side, he held on to a rope and called for assistance. Roused from their slumbers, the crew of this junk put out in a sampan to look for survivors...

In conversation with a "China Mail" reporter this morning, the master gave a vivid account of his experience in the water.

In the master's opinion, all four would have become unconscious in

No trace was found of the rest

of the crew. In addition to the value of the junk, about $1,000, the master and crew lost all their scanty belongings. The cargo was worth only a very small sum.
