Almost penniless, Thomas Whitham, V.C., who won the honour when a private in the Ist Coldstream Guarda, has died of peritonitis at Oldham Royal Infi mary. Whitham won the Cross on July 31, 1917, the opening day of the Battle of Ypres. His batta- Hon were storming positions on Pilckem Ridge, and were held up by enfilade fire from a machine- gun post. He attacked the gun crew single-handed, and bis bravery, enabled his commades to advance.
