London, December 5. With reference to the statement in the Press with regard to the conspiracy to attempt to murder some prominent member of the Government, the Home Secretary, Sir William Joynson-Hicks, states that the precautions taken to protect Cabinet Ministers should not be taken as implying the police are seriously-anxious;~

The police have certain informa- tion and are making further inquiries which it is not desirable at the present moment to reveal.

While these inquiries are pro- gressing, the Commissioner "of. Police, in view of the extent of bis responsibilities for the safety of Cabinet Ministers, felt he must advise the Home Secretary as a necessary precaution to authorise

hoped the result of the police inquiries would be to enable the precautions to be relaxed before very long.

..[Yesterday we received a Reuter cable from London stating that a sensational story had been pub- lished in the "Daily Mail" to the effect that a plot had been dis covered to assassinate prominent members of the Cabinet. News of the conspiracy was supposed to have reached the Government in a despatch from Lord Allenby, The receipt of the news' was said "to have been followed by a special meeting of the Cabinet. This was succeeded by a conference of police chiefs who arranged elaborate measures for protection of Cabinet Ministers. They gave instructions to armed detectives to act drasti- eally if necessary. has been done, the general opin- ion seems to be that it is small and that it is doubtful if the merchants themselves will be willing to enter again on a simi- lar undertaking. The Chinese Chamber of Commerce/will in all probability be the first body to discuss the matter and, the final word rests, of course, with the Government..

In this connection it will be re- membered that Sir Edward Stubbs in his budget speech said: "No vote has been entered for the British Empire Exhibition. The question whether the Exhibi- tion will be continued next year is apparently still unsettled. If it should be decided to continue it, it will be necessary to consider whether Hongkong-should-again. take part in it. The point is one on which two views are possible. and I do not wish to commit this Government to any opinion until the Council has had full oppor- tunity of considering the matter."
