PROSPECTS.

HONGKONG NOT TO PARTICIPATE ?

EXPENSES TOO HEAVY.

Local Business Men's Views.

Will Hongkong participate in the British Empire Exhibition if Wembley is re-opened next year? The possibilities have not yet been the subject of official discussion but a "China Mail" representative who has made enquiries of mer- chants, business men and others gathers that the balance of prob- abilities are all against the Colony being represented next year.

The most weighty factor lead- ing to Hongkong's participation in the first place. it will be remem bered, was the pressure brought to bear by the Colonial Office who thought that Hongkong would be ill-advised to rėmain outside an Empire movement even though the expenditure involved might not be justified on the grounds of

returns.

Nearly all the interested people concerned who were approached by the "China Mail" were of the opinion that if Hongkong is re- presented again next year it will he purely on patriotic grounds although many of them are doubt- ful if these are sufficiently strong to justify an expenditure even of the reduced amount that will be ensured by the permanent nature of much of the buildings which took the greater part of the

original outlay.
