WORLD OF SPORT.

RUGBY

ALL BLACKS COMPARED WITH 1905 TEAM,

IS IT KNOWN 7.

(From "Sunday Sportsman."]

London, October 14:That we [By "Old Public School Boy."I hear the best accounts of the well- being of that once great sprinter, The Night Patrol.

London, October 14-So far the South West and Midlands are the only districts that have been visited by the All Blacks, and there are many thousands of Rugby enthu siasts who are desperately anxious to witness a very fine combination who are making history.

Are the All Blacks of to-day as good as those of 1909? That is the chief thought, and as one who has seen them on six occasions, Imagine the "Sunday Sportsman" readers would like to hear about them.

As yet I would not place them as high in effectiveness as the combination led by Dave Gallaher, but there is little question that they are not far removed.

They are as good behind the scrum, Porter is more valuable than was his predecessor, and Nepia, the young Maori full back, is destined to become one of the greatest defenders the game has

ever seeni,

Where they fall as compared with New Zealand 1905" is in the matter of gaining possession in the scrum. They do not heel with that certainty so desirable if their outsides are to obtain the ball.

It will be interesting to see them against a really sound lot of forwards, such as England last season, who pack 3-2-3 against the New Zealand 2-3-2 Eight good forwards who know their job will always defeat seven, even if the later individually are the superior. In the open when the scrum breaks up and in the line out these New Zealand forwards are rather terrible fellows. Richardson may not be a Charles Seeling, but he is a grand forward, and Cupplest Irvine, and Munro are nearly as good.

I believe if the seven finest New Zealand forwards had W.. W. Wakefield with them as leader, and if they played in the recognise ed English formation, they would make the foest pack the world has

ever seen.

That he is now in Australia, and is under the care of Jim Scobie, whose stables are located in Ascot Vale Road, near Flemington.

That Scobie's establishment la among the most up-to-date in Australia.

That The Night Patrol is now the property of the Governor of Victoria, the Earl of Stradbroke.

That the Earl is, of course, the head of the family of which Admiral Rous was once such a distinguished member.

That The Night Patrol has been entered for the Caulfield Cup, run on October 18, and the Mel bourne Cup, run on November 4

That he has been allotted 8st. 13lb., at Caulfield and 8st rolb, at Flemington.

VOTE OF SYMPATHY WITH MR. WHEELER.

ww

Mr. J. McCubbinɛnresided over a meeting of the H.K.R.A. in the Board Room of Mesara Shewan, Tomes and Company (kindly lent for the occasion) Inst evening. The following were also present- Messrs. After the minutes of the 'pre- ylous meeting bad been con- Armed, the Chairman expressed the sympathy of the H. K. A. with Mr. F. Wheeler on the death of his father the late Cant, F. G. Wheeler; a former Vice President of the Association.

-That Admiral Roas, referred to above, was probably the best handicapper of horses this country ever produced.

*

That he operated at a time when Turf morality was at a very low ebb, and yet managed to hold

his own.

That in his reminiscences William Day talks about Virago being pulled in a selling plate as though it was the most natural and laudable thing in the world.

That in connection with this particular race there is a rather curious story to be told.

That the mare belonged to Mr. Padwick, who started life as a wound up as a solicitor, and successful money-lender.

That she was pulled in the plate mentioned under the Impres- sion that under the rules obtaining in those days she could not be claimed.

That as a matter of fact a rule, overlooked by everybody, had been pissed the year before under which she could have been claimed.

PRINCE PALATINE.

TERRIBLE DEATH OF GREAT HORSE.

Lexington, Ky., October 14.- Prince Palatine, E. F. Simm's $250,000 stallion, was burned to death at Xalapa Farm, Boudbon County, last night.

The horse was in his barri on the Simms farm. Several others were rescued. Origin of the fire was not known here to-day,

Simms bought the horse several years ago. Insured for $10,000, Palatine is said to have brought $250,000 when sold to Simms by the-Duc de Decazes in France, who bought the horse from J.
