The death of Sir Harold Smith, Recorder of Blackburn and young- er brother of Lord Birkenhead, which occurred on September 10th. at the age of forty-eight, puts an untimely end to a career which pro- mised to be one of great brilliance.

Although suffering from the drawback, both in politics and at the Bar, of being overshadowed by

the reputation of his more famous elder brother, Harold Smith would undoubtedly have Rone to the top of the tree, both in Parliament and to the Law Courts, but for persistent ill-health.

Hirabilities were possibly quite as great as Lord Birkenhead's, but he lacked the iron constitution
