VISIT TO CHANG TSO-LIN.
VIEWS OF AUSTRALIAN JOURNALIST.
MUKDEN DICTATOR'S MILD MANNERS.
קן .
Mr. G. C. Dixon, an Australian journalist, who arrived in London from Mukden early in October, contributed the following article to the "Daily Mail," describing the personality and appearance of Marshal Chang Tso-lin, with whom he had a long conversation. Mr. Dixon writes:-
Two great soldiers of fortune are engaged in another (and let us hope the last) stage of their long diel for supremacy in China. The result should settle the fate of the
country for at least a generation.
Chang Tso-lin and Wu Pei-fu, the Commander-in-Chief of the Chinese Government Forces, are the two greatest soldiers that China has produced. In modern times, and it has long been plain that the country, immense though It is, is not large enough to hold
both of them.
ཡ
A few years ago Chang Tso-lin defeated Wu Pel-fu; then Wu Pel furouted the Manchu after a great struggle around Tientsin and Peking. Since then each has waited, with the terrible patience of the East, for a chance to get at the other's throat. When two military governors in the south began hostilitles Chang Tso-lin saw his opportunity and declared

Wu Pel-fu, on the other hand, has been weakened by the diver sion in the south, and it is doubtful whether he can raise more than 200,000 men to meet the menace from the north. He is also weaker in guns and aeroplanes.
Genius though Wu has proved himself to be, he is facing odds, and it is quite likely that the near future will see the Manchu at Peking, either as dictator or possibly (for his ambition is limitless) as Emperor.
