IN KARA SEA:

BRITISH BRING SUPPLIES TO SIBERIA.

A romantic tale lies behind a bald wireless message from the Kara Sea, relayed from Moscow, announcing the arrival off the Siberian coast of three British ships, the Loos, the Arcos and the Leonid Krassin.

These vessels left the Thames on August 2 to reopen the trade route discovered by the famous Captain Wiggins in the eighties. The present expedition was arrang. ed by the London shipping agents of the Soviet Government, and was commanded by the famous Russian explorer, Commander Vilkitzky, but the captains and crews of the ships are British...

Elaborate, arrangements made to ensure the safety of the expedition, which is timed to return in two months.

sentry" is fixed to the bottom of the vessel, and rings a bell on deck when shallow water is reached.

The Arcos and the Loos are bound for the mouth of the Obi River, and the Leonid Krassin for the mouth of the Yenissi River, where it is to meet barges laden with produce from the heart of Siberia, which will be exchanged for cargoes of agricultural imple- ments, medical stores, chemicals, metals, boilers and apparatus.

Bird Sanctuary,

Within seven miles of Padding- ton's busy railway terminus there is a 10-acre wood where London's Birds may mate and nest undis- turbed. It is the Brent Valley Bird Sanctuary, where for 20 years the Selborne Society has carried on its work. During, the past season two unusual' incidents occurred. First, a goldfinch's nest was discovered-the homes of these shy birds are usually a mystery. Next, the son of Mr. W. M. Webb, chairman of the Sanctuary Committee, found some young marsh tits which had been washed out of their nest during a thunderstorm. Two of them showing signs of life, he washed them and placed them in a nest of

Women In Betting Raid.

At Tower Bridge seven women, a boy, and twelve men were charg- ed as a result of a raid on a betting house in Southwark Bridge-road. It was stated that in three days The police saw 47 men, 53 women, and 11 children go to the house. Madame Pavlova'e House.

Few of the many beautiful houses in Hampstead appeal to me So much as that of Madame Pavlova (says a writer in the "Westminster Gazette.") Its charming studio makes an admir able theatre for the rehearsal of the fantasies which delight so many. The dining room, too, is unusual, looking out on a garden which has a unique beauty. one would think from the discreet- ly uninformative side which the house turns to the road that, in a modest space, it finds place for so Even many desirable features. the hall has a special quality which
