Rubber Smugglers,_

The motor launches of the F.M.S. Customs Department had a busy time during a recent week-end, when they effected no fewer than seven-captures of boats of the Johore Coast, attempting to smuggle rubber out of the country. The first capture was on the 17th, when two boats containing 164 pikuls of rubber and manned by seven Chinese, were

seized by the Simbang. The men were later fined $5,000 each, or six months rigorous imprisonment, The Lahat on the 19th accounted for two more boats containing 14 pikuls of rubber, but the seven Chinese-members of the crew were discharged in court as the evidence was not con- clusive. The Peningar, on the same day, captured two boats manned by five Chinese, the crow of one of the boats jettisoning the rubber. A fine of $5,000 or six months was passed on them. Still another capture on the same day was that made by the Pikat of three boats with 30 pikule of rubber. The case is pending Two days later the Lahat seized a boat with 18 pikuls of rubber, and the five Malays on board were fined $4,000 each or six months. The Peningat was responsible for the capture, also on the 21st, of a boat with 25 pikuls of rubber, and arrested one Chinese, who was later fined $5,000 or six months. Another seizure on the 21st was made by the Pikat when the ten Malays manning three boats con- taining 29 pikuls of rubber were GRACA & CO.,

ADVENTUROUS SWIM.

How an alleged burglar swam across the deep and flooded river Avon on a dark night to reach the scene of a raid was told to the Bath magistrates. On the night of August 13 burglars raided Cook's Cloth Factory, Bath, when four rolls of cloth, value £85, were stolen. A man named Golding, of Bristol, was arrested following the discovery of the cloth, which the burglars had hidden, it being: too heavy for removal. which consists in probing the obscure and remote origin of our actions, tracing them back to some latent instinct in the sub- conscious mind, or something that we have "suppressed." The facts here brought to light, in so far as they are facts, are true but not new. But it helps some people to drop the ancient terminology about the Old Adam and original sin, and to adopt a new formula. The idea has of course been over- done; and in some quarters there seems to be a mania for tracing' everything back to suppressed proclivities, and devising the most · far-fetched hypotheses in support. The worst part of the business is the inference, ex pressed or implied, that these sup pressed instincts ought to be given rein. But to indulge a passion is only to strengthen it; and there seems no reason why the Instincts, if barmful, should not be dismissed from system altogether.
