At the headquarters of the In-1 perial Merchant Service Gulld, Liverpool, in mall week, Captain Arthur L. Gordon, commander of the Blue Funnel (Alfred. Holt) liner "Lycaon," was presented with the silver life-saving medal of the Grand Priory of the Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem in England, in recognition of his humane and valuable services in saving life on the occasion of the great Japanese earthquake on September 1st, 1923. The presenta- tion was made. by Captain E. M. Donovan (vice-chairman of the Guild) in the presence of the merri bers of the management committee, with Mr. Lawrence Holt repres senting the Blue, Funnel Line, and Mr. G. B. Say, M.B.E. (chief assistant secretary of the Guild)

Captain A. L. Gordon, who is Hongkong 80 cents sub..... 3% pm. an old member of the Imperial Merchant Service Guild. At the time that the great earthquake took place in Japan, just a year ago. Captain Gordon's ship was lying in Yokohama harbour, and it was for the extraordinary courage and resource which was displayed by him on that occasion when, with out any warning whatever, he suddenly found himself involved in the most terrible happenings it could be the fate of anyone to witness, that he had been awarded this much sought after award.
Ships of all-nationalities: lying. -in-the-harbour when the earth- quake commenced, performed of valour in prodigious feats saving life.
Captain Gordon rendered most conspicuous services in his ship in saving life. The Guild brought these services to the notice of the Order,
They felt that Captain Gordon should have received something from the British Government, but in spite of their representations on the matter nothing was forthcom- ing. The British Government saw fit to make two awards only, the Order of the British Empire, to the .captains of two ships, but in spite of their protest nothing further came so far as Captain Gordon was concerned.
Captain Donovan said he felt it' a very great honour to have the privilege of presenting the medal to Captain Gordon. As a brother seaman he was full of admiration
for the manner in which Captain Gordon had handled his ship, and which made the saving of life possible.
In presenting the medal Captain Donovan, expressed heartiest con gratulations of the Guild upon the well-deserved honour which had been dose to the recipient (Applause.)
