STORY-TELLING.

DANGERS OF WRITTEN WORD.

Mr. John Masefield spoke of the art of the novel and the drama to an audience in the University Examination Schools, composed chiefly of foreign students who are taking the University Exten- sion course. on "Contemporary, England."

The Golden Age of the story- teller, he said, was the day of the spoken story, when the narrator had his audience around hirm, helping him to create strange fancies and lending him on beyond himself to greater things. There was in the absence of a living audience the temptation to dis course on matters not vital to the progres of the story, to write about the psychology of the people concerned, and about a hundred and one details of minor import ance. The act of writing has beau the great cause of decadence to the art of the story-teller.

The story-teller wrote about the whole of life, and a great French critic had said that the novel should be the mirror of the market. place. The dramatist, on the other hand, wrote of the conflict between the minds of men and women. You got drams when one man said to another "Do that," and the other man said "I will not. Then the first man got his friends, and they mid to the other man, "Will you do it or shall we make you?" and he replied, 'I. will rather die than do it." When you had tint in draina your audience would wait anxiously for the end. All good drama had an

d.

"It was a great fault in much good modern drama that it shirked the end. That was why people had to some exterit left the theatre, where they could not see drama worked out, and had gone to the shadow theatre, where they could sce a series of incidents.

There

had been seven or eight masters of the theatre, and frain those seven' or eight drama could be learnt.

What was the writer either of the novel or the drama seeking to achieve? He was trying to brood upon some constant principle in buman life, in order that by so doing he might perhaps come upon the answer to the great questions of life which all men would gladly sde answered. In pursuing that. queat he came at times into a world of wondrous beauty and strangeness

w

At other times he was tempted to think that this world of beauty existed only in his own mind; but this was not so, because if it were he could always have access to it, and very few hours of a man's lild; were spent in that rare atmosphere. The artist's conclusión was that this world of wonder we built up by the courage of men like himself, and that he was privileged to enter that spiritual world and, by creat ing spiritual persons, make it large, and win men to it,

But here was a great responsi bility, for he must see to it that the images he created were beautiful or he might do great! harm. There came to him it time the power to call spiritual presences into the world. It was only one of the ways by which they could port into the world; but in this modern life of ours it was a very important way.
