a mistake. "Ten thousand diffi-On culties" said Newman "do not make

doubt" highly numerical way of pulling it. He meant that difficulty and doubl are not commensurate. Doubt, is a subjective condition, a paralysis of the will, a reduction of the temperature beyond the point at which faith can live. If we better understood the nature of doubt, we should have a clearer idea of the exorcise of faith. Doubt is a certain, incapacity to assume, making venture impossible. Diff culties may conspire to induce this condition, even one difficulty may tend to it, if it be allowed to occupy the entire field of con- sciousness! Yet the two are quite distinct, nor does the admission of difficulties present any obstacle to faith. The admission of difficul- ties is probably what the poet meant when he sang of "honest doubt "this being a meaningless phrase governed. let us charitably suppose, by the exigency of rhyme. Faith can live and act in the pre sence of many difficulties. One of our most familiar difficulties lies in reconciling the sovereignty of
