Corvi was arrested: he declared he was a Com munist and wanted to avenge-Matteotti.

WIDE-SPREAD HORROR.

The whole of Italy is horror-stricken at the crime, which bas further increased the tension of the nation's nerves.

I

Was

The assallant, Glovanni Corvi, who is a carpenter,

formerly a porter at Signor Casalini's villa. He fired three shots. Casalini was wounded in the forehead and in one of his temples. He sank into his seat in the tramsgar, against his fourteen-year old daughter, murmuring:

They've killed me.".

Carvi threatened the conductor and the passenger with his revolver. He tried to escape, but was caught by some passing Carabiniers and soldiers, who had some difficulty in protecting him' from the crowd, which threatened to lynch him..

Corvi-appeared to be unbalanced, and border ing on insanity. He said he had killed Casalini li order to avenge "my brother in idealism, Matteoti." Signor Casalini was removed to hospital, but died on the operating table.

CABINET MEETING HELD.

The Cabinet has met and is taking measures to ensure public order.

The whole press of the Directory and Fascist Party is exhorting the nation to exercise restraint.

The poet-deputy Benelli, the leader of the new Italic League, publishes an Impassioned appeal to the whole nation to lay down arms and end the martyrdom, terror and threats which are stifling the nation's civilisation.

Signor Casalini was a popular and important member of the Fascist Party. He leaves a widow and five children,

EVICTION OPPOSED.

CROWD SIDE: WITH WIDOW.

SHERIFF AND POLICE STONED..

(Reuter's Servies,)

LONDON, September 12. There were exciting scenes at Clydebank this morning, when a crowd of 500 persons prevented the Sheriff's officers and a party of police from evicting a widow and her family for non-payment of arrears of rent.

They pelted the officers and police with cloda and stones etc.

Subsequently several of the Labour Town Councellors addressed the crowd.

A local committee has been established to organise a campaign of resistance. If the house factors decline to join the rent tribunal, a general rent strike may be declared throughout the district,

SHARES IN MCVITIE AND PRICE.

MR MACDONDALD INTERVIEWED."

NOTHING TO DO WITH POLITICS

(Reuter's Service.)

LONDON, September 14, Comment has been excited by the fact that £30,000 in shares, in Messrs. McVitie and Price have been állotted to the Premier.

Interviewed on the subject at Lossiemouth, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald explained that the capital was not his

TECHNICAL OWNERSHIP.

He only technically owned the shares, which had been allotted to him for the endowment of a' motorcar presented to him by Sir Alexander Grast, managing director of Mc Vitle and Price. and which he felt he could not afford to keep if he went out of office. The shares at the Premier's death would revert to the Grant family. The matter had nothing to do with polllics.

Sir Grant, said the Premier, got his baronetcy. for public services including his gift to the National Library for Scotland.
