The most spectacular drill ever photographed was the "abandoring" of the U.S.S. "Colorado,” one · of the greatest warships afloat, in mid-Atlantic. The crew of the "sinking" vessel were "rescued" by the destroyer "Sharkey," summoned by wireless. The drill was part of an abandon ship" drill which would have been a reality if the vessel were actually sinking. The men rushed to collision quarters, donned life preservers, dropped their life boats from the davits, clambered into them from swinging-Jacob's-ladders, and pull away from the "sinking" vessel. As would be the case in the event of an actual disaster, Captain R.. R. Belknap,, commanding the superdreadnought, refused to leave the ship until every other man was off. Then he turned and saluted the colours before entering a life-boat just as his ship "foundered.”
