SOME RECORD RUNS "COOKED."

The old clipper ships that made such fast voyages in the last century

not always so speedy as their records indicated. In those days the most reliable method of taking the speed for a short run was "heaving the log." This "log" was a triangular | piece of wood that was kept up- right-in-the-water on-the-end-ofa line coiled round a big reel and marked at intervals with knots.

The proper way to heave this instrument was for one seaman to heave it overboard, another to hold the reël and a third to hold the sandglass, which generally ran down in twenty-eight seconds.

As soon as the white tag on the line, which showed where the calculation was to begin, went over the ship's rail the man watching the line would cry “Tura.” The holder of the sand glass would at once reverse. it, and as soon as it had run out he would call "Stop." Then the number of knots which had run out between the "Turn " and the "Stop" were counted and the speed thus calculated.

It was not a very reliable method of judging speed and was part- cularly subject to faking, as is shown by Miss Fox Smith's account in her "Book of Famous Ships," of how it used to be done in some vessels which wanted to publish records.

"Did hear you say "Turn,' Nathan?" leisurely inquires the man with the glass.

"Wal, yes, I guess you did." "Then, sulting the action to the word, "turn it is !”

The same sort of business went on with the call of."Stop" from the sand-glass man, so it may well be imagined that a surprising amount of line had run out when the reckoning was taken.

But, though we may smile at them for this, the captains of these clipper ships were the finest sea- men ever produced, and no matter whether they were English or American, they knew their work from A to Z...
