LORD MORLEY.

DETESTED PARADOX ÄND

SILLY PLATITUDES:

Mr. Birrell unveiled at the National Liberal Club last month a portrait of the late Lord Morley.

Lord Morley, he said, paid no attention to that. which was called succeeding in life. He was above that kind of vulgarity, but in fact often liked men that the world accounted a considerable failure.

Extreme views riever frightened him, nor was he at all startled by reaction, because he knew that where there were extreme views there would be reactionary views. He shared with Dr. Johnson ab horrence and contempt for a man who professed to be indifferent to a good dinner. (Laughter.)

Interesting" proceeded Mr. Birrell, is the word I should apply to Lord Morley. When I entered the House of Commons he was the most interesting man there with the exception of Mr. Gladstone. Interesting he always was; his books and politics were interesting || in his lifetime, and I am perfectly certain they will be found interest- ing hereafter"

It may be said that present politics run in a counter-direction to those which might have com mended themselves to Lord Morley who never lost his faith in youth, and the older he grew the more pleasure he seemed to take in the company of youth, wholly irrespective of its political opinions provided always that those young men never ceased to take grave interest in the destiny not merely of Great Britain, but also of the whole human family, and also provided that they detested with almost furious fervour the heartless folly of paradox and of! silly, slushy platitudes." (Laughter) and cheers).

The portrait which was unveiled is a replica of the original by the Hon. John Collier, R.A.

LONDON OUTCASTS.

ARMY OF OVER 18,000 HOMELESS PERSONS.

What is the number of London's homeless population—the outchsts who huddle together on the Em- bankment or underneath archways every night? Two years ago a census return showed that in all 18,832 persons of this class existed in London

The figures are given in the volume of London's statistics for 1921-23, published by the L.C.C.. and issued by P. S. King and Son, Ld., Westminster, price ISS.

Many other points of interest are in the volume. London In point of population, for instance, is still the largest city in the world. Its present-day population of 7,573,469 has grown from a total of little over. one million a century ago.

In poor relief during the parlod from 1920-21 London spent a sum of £7.987,654, and over 100,000 11- employed persons remained on the Labour Exchange registers from

- January to 1922, to November 5,

1923.

In the artistic and literary spheres

the huge population bears a good record. It is shown in figuros, both over a million, of visitors to the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. There was also a great call on the. libraties. Chetsen readers asked faĽIT5,038 WOIÊy of-fiction-darlogt- the year, but Battersea beat them with a demand for 196,577 works. of a similar class, dire
