FUTURE OF HARD COURTS.
MrTilden's recent prophesy that the lawn tonals court of the variety should be in a fair way to pear future will be of the hard
fulfilment if effect is wiven to the proposal considered by the Council of the Lawn 15 London recently. At the Tepuis Association present time grass is the recognised "surface for Davis Cup ties, and contrary all ties must be played failing mutual agreement to the or grass. If the now suggestion le approved, it will mend that the hard court receives recognition. Mrs. Rachel Allison, Chester, be used as well as the make of The choice of the type of court, to who was 102 yesterday, as in halls with then go with priority in the German bombardment of the draw. The proposal seems to Scarborough and Zeppelin raids be an eminently reasonable one, at Middlesbrough and Rotherham. The grass court savours too much of the days when England reigned shindwa. The“ Japanese' House of Repre-
sentatives has passed the Luxuries prema in the world Coffinw Tax Billy raising the duty on tennis and her methods and
traditions Imported: luxuries to 100 per cent.uide for the rest of the were the accepted world. But those days have: toe to her tradition of the grass passed. England has remained court, but in doing so she is in a vary small minority and1⁄4fn- cidentally, the standard, of her Players has, fu the opinion of most competent critics, suffered there- by. Apat altogether from the superiority of the hard type as ay "all-weather court, it is very much faster. To the slower grass courts is attributed the failure of increased speed, the lack of English players to acquire that which is generally regarded as their chief failing at the present time. But, looking at the matter from a world point of view it is eminently desirable that official fact that grass is no longer the recognition should be given to the only or even the most generally favoured surface for lawn tennis climatic conditions render really courts to-day. In 'some countries good grass court almost an im possibility, but the hard court Is practicable anywhere.
