THE WEATHER.

HOW TO FORGET IT.

London, July 10-A man told" me yesterday that we had only one fine day during last July. He had quite forgotten that it was one of the best Julys of recent years, a month with many sunny days and a spell of great heat. What he did remember was that there had been a great thunder-storm, the few hours of which he spread out to make a drenching month.

We are So it is with most of us. ready, as the seasons come round, to talk very positively of the corresponding seasons in other years, and in the end we find that wo remember very little at all Our weather about the weather. memory is, in fact, extraordinarily

Ask your neighbour to name the driest and wettest years on record, and probably he will not be able to recall either. Yet the driest was only three years ago, in 1921, and the wettest only 21 years ago, in 1903.

It is strange how 1921 has slipped from our memories. Water was short and we were crying out for rain. But say, now, that that was a wonderful summer, and the reply you get is, "Oh, was it? I thought we had not had a fine summer since the war."

That is a fixed belief which makes us forgetful of many blessings. Yet last summer was good in parts, and even 1922 had a bright carly spell. The first year after the war, 1919, had splendid

VIBRATIONS CAUSED BY TUBES AND TRAFFIC.
