LONDON, August 13. “ Field-Marshal "Lord Alledby, High Con missioner for Egypt, and Major General Sir Lee Stack, Governor-General of the Sudan and Sirdar of the Egyptian Army, had a long conference afin bringing Over-Seas visitors fito contact with the Foreign Office with Mr. Ramsay MacDonald to-day on the subject of the Sudan.

.: CASE OF SALFORD. This was exemplified in the case of Salford, which yesterday, gave a fund con 10 prominent visitors from Africa and the East..

The Hon. Mr. E. R. Halifax, C.B.E., Com." missioner from Hongkonu, made a speech in which he emphasised that the real object of the Exhibition was unattainable without the interchange of ideas. Without this, it would be reduced to the level of a museum. If the "Exhibition was reopened in 1925, he said, the example given by Salford would make 1925 mere valuable than 1924-

BRITAIN'S COMPETITORS.

The Rajah Muda of Perak said that more attention was paid to the cotton requirements of the natives by Britain's competitors thau by Lancashire. However, he had seen to-day certain cloths of royal colour and he would tell the native rulers where they were obtainable.

The Big Fourteen" did not meet this after- noon as arranged. One reason was that no agree. ment had been reached at the French, Belgian and German conference this morning. The conversa tions with the last named will continue this morn-the

ing.

Reuter's Agency has made enquiries with regard to the probable duration of the Conference. A high authority told the Agency, last night, thai

it might last."twelve hours or twelve days."

LESS OPTIMISM NOW.

The Conference situation has undergone a change. Indications at present are not so optimistic, The Ruhr negotiations have apparently reached a virtual deadlock. The French Delegation insist that the evacuation cannot be carried out under a year from the specified date. The Germans 'contend that troops should-be withdrawn "within a period of a month from the time stated. Mr. Ramsay MacDonald has been approached to act as mediator..

According to present arrangements the French Belgians and Germans will meet early to-morrow, after which there will be à meeting of the Big Fourteen,"

LATER.

The French, Belgian and German conversation have been adjourned until tomorrow. There is great reticence in all quarters regarding progress. It is believed negotiations have now reached u decisive point. It is expected the Germans will definitely reply to-morrow to the points enumerated by M. Herriot.

GERMANY AND, FRANCE,

It is reported that the French and German, Finance Ministers last night definitely.arranged to conclude commercial treaty. The Franco- German experts have been summoned, to London to draft their proposals. "

¥

EVACUATION OF RUHR

To-day is most likely to witness the decisive stage of the London Conference. M. Herrict. and the Belgian Ministers conferred with Herren Marz and Stresemann at Downing Street this morning on the questions of the date of the military evacuation of the Ruhr, the military control of "Germany and French security and the proposed Franco-German commercial treaty.
