GRETNA GREEN RECORDS NOTICE TO SHIPPERS

"SALE OF 1,000 MARRIAGE CERTIFICATES.

There was brisk) bidding at Sotheby's recently for a thick manuscript volume in Russia gilt "and a bulky parcel of marriage certificates. These formed" a complete record of the Gretna Green marriages performed by John Linton, who kept the Gretna Hall Inn between 1825 and 1854. Soon after the latter date Tunaway weddings in Scotland were stopped by Act of Parliament.

The relices were sold by a descendant of Linton, whose house was the most popular for eloping couples, as is clear from the fact that between 1,000 and 1,200 certificates were sold at Sotheby's. The collrotion was shown at the Scottish Exhibition at Glasgow in 1911.
