NEW ART OF THE EAST.

..

THE INFLUENCE OF WEST-

ERN #TRADITIONS.

The Indian and Burmese pic- tures at Wembley have a value: quite of their own. It is not, as in

the Dominions, a case of creating

a new arī, but of a new art grow- ; ing up in reizions which have prob- ably the oldest artistic traditions in the world. The thief interest to the critic Res in considering how the we act and react on each other, This is especially interest- ing in the numerous cüses where the artists teal with the legends I of the Past.

Jis naturally impossible for the "artist bere so depart entirely from conven:inns fixed for centuries; but in many cases Western idens leave their trives in the general- design and the colour schemes, Bat on the other hand the serene pansionless faces and the many- armed divinitles are much the same as those which are seen in the ancient art of the East.

Other European Ideas.

1 is in the landscapes that Western juftiences nie' the most noticeable, and these are more in évidence in the Bombay section. where Die artists also seem to be 'more interested in modern life. There are a good niany landscapes here which might have been the work of European painters, and pictures like Mr. M. V. Dhurand- har's spectacular Glory, of Pand- | harpur might have come from an English studio.

The mortuits in this section also suggest that the artists have not been trained wholly in the East. In one sense, one of the most interesting pictures in the Exhibi- tion is, the 'view of the Cliff of Chepstów, by the Burmese. Mr. Ba Nyan, which is the only Euro- pean subject treated by an East- `ern artist and the same painter

also sends an allegorical design," Industry in Burmy. From inter- mal evidence alone it would be impossible to say that this was the' work of an Eastern artist,

Pictures from New Zealand. The pictures from New Zealand at Wembley are, like those from Canada, of more than local inters est. The same general considera- tions apply as in the case of Canada. The" pictures exhibited number 97. and they exemplify a considerable variety of styles.

Artists of New Zealand are, apparently extremely fond of the. Harbours of Wellington and Lyttelton, which, indeed, have con-. siderable natural beauty." Gwyn- neth Richardson (No. 9) gives us a pleasant glimpse of Wellington "Harbour, Murcos King's Midsum-

mer afternoon, Wellington (No.- 27) conveys an excellent impres- sion of torrid heat, and 'W. Menzies, Gibb makes Lyttelton Harbour exceedingly attractive.

Addressing the Association of Conservative Clubs, the Right Hon. Stanley Baldwin, M.P., defined the aim of the party as one which sought co-operation and unity in the nation as opposed to. the class hatred and disruption for! which the Socialists worked.

The French Teacher.

The French teacher is probably the most hardworked official in the world, partly because of the high standard demanded of him or her and partly because of the con- ditions 'under which she works (says the "Manchester Guardian.)" For one thing, a teacher is suppos ed to have the airs of a teacher. In the case of women, this means that the old den of convent instruction has set up for lay teachers on uninspiring standard of dress and demeanour which resembles that obtaining in "Jane. Eyre" or "Vilette." For another there are still greater difficulties between religious and lay educa tion than was the case before the war, and finally: modern ideas of có-education, exorciser freedom, are still regarded by the majority of the French with the darkest suspicion.A teacher has to be either remarkably disinterested or remarkably hard” páte topis:before sheeotors upon an educational career.
