THE MEN OF KENT.
SIR IAN HAMILTON'S FINE PRAISE.
General Sir Ian Hamilton, un veiling the Ashford (Kent) War Memorial, said the men and women of Kent held, wonderful records for fighting. Their fathers plied their bills and axes, standing
to mail-clad knights so fiercely, -standing-up naked to meet the mail-clad Norman knights, that William the Conqueror found it. convenient to parley with them after his victory at Hastings."
What was that battle fought
« for? A trick of filing the bones i
of a saint under the altar Harold swore upon. An oath that was to have been a scrap-of paper made valid by superstition. Again they fought, in that most dreadful battle of Towton, in Yorkshire, when, on Palm Sunday of 1461, the little river called the Cockburn ran crimson. For seven, mortal hours those Kentish.lads fought in the snowstorm, until, sullenly, the North had to give way to the. South. For this, the bloodiest and most desperate battle ever fought, Kent, and turned out
her the whole of
archers under the notable Captain Robert Horne. And what were they fight-1 ing for? They really fought for a 'symbol-a rose-a red rose.
The men of Kent had always been susceptible to the magical | influence of the word "glory." which was so near a relative of that other terrible word "gory." Therefore, though their brains: condemned war, their hearts were i always very soft towards those warriors who had gone out, as those lads did, to fight for an abstraction-for a scrap of paper! -for a red rose. They jeopardis- ed their lives in the high places | of the field and lost them there so that we might have respite and happiness. We had not got respite and happiness; the British Legion was still seeking to retrieve it from the ghastly muddle of the prace.
"When the spirit moves you, give a kind thought to this memorial," continued Sir Ian Hamilton. "Cherish it. If you pass it and you are in the mood. take off your hat to it, and i̟would even suggest a schoolgiri might not be too proud to drop a curtsey to the fallen. "Tis a pretty ges ture, and yet, since women have become so powerful, it is falling into disuse."
In a subsequent speech, the General remarked that he had ́un- veiled a good number of memorials lately, not because he was parti- cularly talented In that direction, but because the other Generals were so infernally lazy.
